INTRODUCTION

Artifical vs. Organic

MIRO is a critical design project that explores what love could look like in a society headed toward an AI dystopia. As AI-generated art eliminates the irreplaceable humanness of manmade art, MIRO is a commentary on AI learning to complete human tasks while excluding emotions in its process- especially in something so fundamentally organic like love.

While brainstorming with project proposals, I was inspired by my concurrent read of The Art of Loving. Psychologist Erich Fromm describes love as an art form—like painting and sculpting—a craft that demands mastery and understanding. The timing was perfect, reading about the art of love at a time when artificial intelligence (AI) is being trained to shortcut the labor and heart that goes into manmade art. And so I conceptualized MIRO, a hyper-futuristic, anthropomorphized matchmaking AI system that eliminates confusing emotions in its generative process and connects two people together from the data it extracts from them.
